FAQ’s

1. What is the difference between Sisterlocks and Microlocs?

Sisterlocks and Microlocs are both small, refined loc styles, but the main differences are in the technique, flexibility, maintenance, and who can install them.

Sisterlocks

  • Trademarked system that uses a specific interlocking pattern
  • Must be installed and maintained by a certified Sisterlocks consultant
  • Requires a mandatory consultation and class-based certification
  • Uses a special tool and uniform sizing
  • Retightening is done strictly by interlocking
  • Typically higher in cost due to certification and system requirements
  • Less flexibility in how they are started and maintained

Microlocs

  • Not trademarked, allowing more freedom in technique
  • Can be started using two-strand twists, braids, coils, or interlocking
  • Can be installed and maintained by a licensed loctician or trained professional
  • Allows for custom sizing, parting, and density control
  • Maintenance can include reties, palm rolling, or a combination
  • Generally more versatile and customizable for different hair types and lifestyles
  • Often more budget-friendly and flexible long term

2. Which is better?

Neither is better—it depends on your goals:

  • Choose Sisterlocks if you want a structured, uniform system and don’t mind strict rules and higher cost.
  • Choose Microlocs if you want customization, flexibility, and control over how your locs are started and maintained—especially important for hair health and density.
3. When to Color Microlocs

Before your Microlocs are installed

Coloring first allows your hair to be strong, balanced, and evenly processed before it’s sectioned into small locs. This helps prevent thinning, breakage, and weak spots later on. If you’re going to a licensed cosmetologist, she can advise you accordingly.
